  Participation in the Yak-130 Programme

Developed by the Yakovlev Design Bureau, the Yak-130 two-seat combat trainer was chosen in April 2002 as the main aircraft for basic and advanced training for pilots of the Russian Air Force. The Yak-130 can be used for drilling up to 80% of the skills specified by the training program. This reduces the number of the required types of trainers and the time the pilot needs for learning to fly alternative aircraft. Also this considerably simplifies pilot certification in combat aircraft control. The Yak-130 aircraft is a key component of the training aids suite which includes an integrated independent monitoring system, computer-furnished class rooms, navigational and special purpose simulators.

The control system of the Yak-130 has a reprogramming capability which allows pilots to quickly learn how to handle modern combat aircraft such as the Su-30, the MiG-29 and their foreign counterparts. In addition the Yak-130 can be used for drilling combat application of arms in air-to-air and air-to-surface modes. The aircraft is fitted with nine suspension points which can carry up to 3 tons of ordnance.

Under two separate contracts the Yak-130 will be delivered to the Russian Air Force (12 aircraft) and to the Algerian Air Force (16 aircraft and simulator).

Manufacturing of Aircraft Units for Foreign Customers

On December 21, 2004, the first contract was signed for the commencement of production of keel beams, flap guide rails, floor structures and nose strut bays for the highly popular A320 aircraft at the manufacturing facilities of the Irkutsk Aviation Plant (IAP). This contract envisages the fulfillment of orders worth US$ 200 million over a 10-year period with a few more contracts to follow.

The total book of orders for the current year amounts to US$ 340 million. According to the current estimates it can reach US$ 1.985 billion by 2015.

The preparation for the said contracts’ fulfillment coincided with the fundamental refurbishing of the Irkutsk production facilities by investing US$120 million.

This re-equipment consisted in procuring the latest technological tooling. The new electroplating shop worth US$15 million was commissioned, which has no equal and sets new standards in Russian manufacturing. The luminescent inspection shop was set up, as well as new mechanoprocessing and aggregate assembly facilities. The new special programs for the personnel training were developed and implemented, including the probation at the partner-plants in Germany and France. A separate logistics service with own storage facilities was established.

This resulted in the Irkutsk Aviation Plant becoming the first and so far the only one Russian aircraft manufacturer certified against the Airbus standards.

First series deliveries of the components ordered are due to commence this year while in 2008 it is planned to reach 50% production capacity. Starting 2010 US$100 million worth of products shall be dispatched to the Airbus plants annually. Within the next few years Irkut is anticipated to achieve an annual turnover of US$300 million.

  MC-21 Aircraft Family

In July 2007 the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) executive committee designated the Irkut Corporation as the head contractor in the MC-21 program to be implemented jointly with the Russia`s leading design bureaus.

The results of the first stage (Gate 1) were considered and approved by the special UAC commission headed by the UAC’s president Alexey Fedorov on the 14th of August 2007.  The decision was taken to carry on with the project.

The МC-21 is being developed as a family of short-medium range airliners with the passenger carrying capacity of 150-210. The MC-21 family is to take the place of the Tu-154 and second-hand foreign aircraft in the Russian airlines’ fleets while successfully competing in international market.

The airliner is due to hit the market in 2015-16.

In order to create the competitive product the МC-21 developers intend to meet the highest requirements to the ecological impact, noise levels, passenger cabin comfort, perspective aircraft economic and operational performance,  high fuel efficiency,  minimum maintenance costs.

The basic concept covers the maximum appropriate unification of airframe and systems in order to operate various MC-21 modifications within one airline fleet.  The МC-21 production envisages wide utilization of the up-to-date materials like perspective aluminium alloys and composites. It shall feature the cutting-edge highly economical engines and the state-of-the-art avionics.

Minimum MC-21 cash operating cost, international certification as per the norms of Russian Aircraft Register of the Interstate Aviation Committee, EASA, FAA and special logistic support throughout the aircraft lifecycle should ensure this product’s success with both Russian and foreign aircraft operators.
